Sharmila: A Journey of Resilience
Sharmila Tamang’s story is one of resilience, hope, and success despite facing challenging circumstances. She came from a poor community in Dhading, where her family struggled to make ends meet. Despite facing financial difficulties, she was determined to pursue her education and create a better future for herself and her family. However, her family could not afford to educate her, and she ended up in one of the Childcare Homes in Kathmandu for further education.
When our Higher Ground Rescue team first met Sharmila, we recognized her at-risk situation and immediately rescued her, bringing her under our Protection and Care Emergency Shelter when she was just 16 years old.
With our support and the help of our Scholarship program, Sharmila was able to continue her studies. We were delighted to discover her gift of art and design, which led to a full-time job opportunity at Higher Ground Crafts as a jewelry designer. She also worked part-time as a junior artist at the Early Childhood Education Centre, where she gained valuable experience.
Today, Sharmila is pursuing higher studies at the IEC School of Arts and Fashion. We are proud to say that she has successfully reintegrated back into society with her sister and is living an independent life. Her achievements are a testament to the power of education, support, and resilience.
Sharmila’s success story is a reminder of why we do the work we do at Higher Ground Community Development Nepal. We are committed to empowering vulnerable individuals like her to achieve their potential and create a better future for themselves and their families. We are honored to be part of her journey and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
